Willow: Hi, guys. W-what's goin' on? Buffy: Apparently there's been a really big mix-up. Giles: Uh, it seems somehow that, uh, another Slayer has been sent to Sunnydale. Willow: Is that even possible? I mean, two Slayers at the same time? Giles: Not to my knowledge. Um, th-the new Slayer is only called after the previous Slayer has died. Uh... Oh, good Lord! You were dead, Buffy. Buffy: I was only gone for a minute. - from 'What's My Line' [Ficlets and Drabbles] [Fic Updates] [Icons/Graphics/Vids] [News/Discussion/More] |

Here’s today’s progress on the west coast steampunk Victoriana book with zombies, air ships, toxic gas clouds, mad scientists, dead folk heroes, secret criminal societies, and Bonus! extended deleted scenes from the Civil War:
Project: The Boneshaker Things Accomplished in Real Life: Two loads of laundry, including bedding; sent off book review; corresponded extensively with distant friends and colleagues; learned my way around my twitter account a little better; determined that I might be far too boring to maintain this twitter account; decided that maybe I’d just use it as a link dump or something, but I don’t want to ditch it yet; spent a downright silly amount of time chatting in gmail with my college roommate and a fashion-fixated Australian woman. Reason for Stopping: Came to the end of my chapter. Also, it’s Tuesday night — and that means that The Helvetica Quartet shall ride again … or at least, we shall drink and giggle and participate in a pub quiz over in West Seattle. Ergo, I ought to brush my hair or throw on some respectable clothes or something. Also [:: glances out the window ::] I need to drag out my rain boots. The weather is sucking ass.* Total Fiction Words Composed in 2008: 191,842 * I hear that — starting tomorrow — it’s supposed to get pretty for three or four days in a row … but then the weather will return to its regularly scheduled ass sucking. Oh yes. You can count on it. [Crossposted to/from my website. If you'd like to comment, you can do so either here or there.]

Trashy Breakroom Gorp
So, I was at work today, and my pathetic tiny microwave manicotti just was NOT enough food... So what's a girl to do? I pumped some cash into the vending machines and came up with this: mix in a cup, eat with a spoon. it. was. amazing. |

That's gonna be tight....
I'm anxious! Jon gets home tonight from college. He'll be here till the beginning of Sept. when he'll go back to NYC for his second year at NYU. His flight at LaGuardia was delayed (I'm not surprised), and so his plane arrives in Denver at 7:15 p.m. now instead of the original scheduled time. His flight to Colo Spgs from Denver leaves at 7:30 p.m. Gee, that's NOT a lot of time at all. His flight details: Airline: United Departure Arrival Inflight

My Trip to Goh-juh
Husband and I went to Atlanta, GA last week so I could attend the International Reading Association's annual convention. We came prepared with a list of tasty places to eat. Unfortunately, I forgot to take pictures of most of it... but trust me, it was all good.

while we're on the topic of new rep....
I'm giving a recital in August with almost entirely new rep, plus a few of my own compositions :o Soooo I'm kinda freaking out! Any advice on these pieces would be appreciated... Bach Bb partita (this one should be fine, I learned the minuets and the gigue years ago and have already got the prelude and most of the allemande down. I'm more of a Bach player than anything else) Liszt Transcendental Etudes - Preludio and Harmonies du Soir (I'm most worried about how on earth I'm going to get the Preludio up to speed!) Schumann Papillons (some of those pieces are way fast) For reference, the highest level of rep I've played to date would be the Mendelssohn G minor concerto, the Chopin c# minor etude op 10 no. 4, and a couple years ago I did the 1st mvt of the Waldstein and Liszt's Sposalizio from Years of Pilgrimage. Soooo basically I'm expecting the Liszt and Schumann to kick my butt! |

Dostoyevsky
Quick question. I read The Brothers Karamazov years ago, but never read Crime and Punishment until just now. Maybe it is nostalgia or something, but I loved the Brothers K compared to C&P. Which do you prefer?

i'm going to tear your ass up like we just got married, and you're all mine now.
GUYS, GUESS WHOSE SHOW'S COSTARS ARE THE DOINGITEST? (Yeah, that's a word. Sorry y'all.) Tragically, it is not Katee Sackhoff and Tricia Helfer. YET. BUT OMFG, IT IS BLAKE LIVELY AND PENN BADGLEY. Guys, they are totally the new Zanessa. And it's adorable and beachy and has MAKEOUTS, how cute is that. Also: PROBABLY NOT SET PHOTOS, because apparently they went on, like, wacky Mexican vacation together and DID THIS. ( below a cut because I am sensitive to your needs ) (Yanked from the classy-as-hell People.com Gallery that confirmed the rumors.)

Sticky Pages ![]() Okay, I’m a little scared of today’s Sticky Pages. Mainly because I’m just a little scared of the book. However, the author is Ian Kerner. He wrote the profoundly important, She Comes First, which I reviewed a few weeks ago. I have since considered making my presidential choice based on the candidate who comes out in favor of every tax paying American getting, not economic stimulus checks, but rather, a copy of Kerner’s seminal work. The book today is Sex Detox. It has a hot pink cover, which I’m naturally drawn to because I’m a woman and my X chromosomes condition me to believe all books with pink covers are meant to enhance my life without putting too much pressure on me to think about stuff, like character development, or language, or plot, or stuff other than shopping and rich men. And high-heeled shoes. My life would be so much richer if Penguin would just release their classics with pink covers. So Sex Detox. Kerner is saying that by not having any sex for a month, you’ll have greater sex when the month is over. And he has all of these scientific studies to back it up. The book is filled with exercises and tests and journal ideas to keep you busy for the month. He encourages exercise and a good diet to improve your sex life (I recommend pomegranate cocktails -- antioxidants and social lubricant!). And, of course, visiting his website, www.iankerner.com. Because I’m a girl, and the only tests at which I excel are about relationships, I’ll excerpt a few questions from one of Kerner’s quizzes. This one is to determine How Toxic Is Your Sex Life? |

Thane
More pics of Thane, my gray wolf skull. He's happy to see you! And the money shot, a view straight between the teeth of one of the world's most wonderful predators. Spend some time just looking at it, the curves of the tooth rows, the curves of the cheekbone, the long, oval curves of the jaws themselves. Even in an animal as angular as a wolf, there are beautiful curves. I have taken measurements and examined his sutures and his crests, and while I can't really guess how old he was because I'm just not that good yet, I can say that he was fully-grown. His nasal bones, the long ones atop the snout, are well-anchored and do not move. The sutures were pretty well-closed. His sagittal crest was well-developed and had advanced some distance along the front of his skull. He showed no signs of old age, though, so my guess is that he was somewhere between three and seven. He was on the large side. He's about eleven and a half inches long, which, with the width across his cheekbones, marks him almost without a doubt as male. I've been meaning to post these for a while, and I've got more skulls to show you, too. I thought I'd start with Thane, because he is so special to me.
